After checking out, it’s time for one last on-resort adventure: The Rockland Breakwater. Located at the edge of the property, this marvel of a jetty constructed from massive blocks of granite juts out into the bay for almost a mile. It takes about 15 minutes to stroll the full length (round trip) of the landmark, where on its easternmost end, a lighthouse stands sentinel over the harbor.

Visit a Maine Vineyard [Lincolnville, ME]

After departing Rockport, take a quick pit stop to nearby Lincolnville, Maine, just 15 minutes north and home to Cellardoor Winery. This establishment not only showcases its state-of-the-art winery but is also home to a 5.5-acre vineyard and large barn for sampling their 20 wines made largely from imported grapes (with the exception of their ice wine). Tours of the winery are offered at 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and self-guided tastings are available from 12 to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. For a more intimate and educational experience, hosted tasting bars are available by reservation on Saturday and Sunday afternoons with a Cellardoor host.

Stop at the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory [Bucksport, ME]

After grabbing lunch at one of the many roadside stops that line Route 1 from Belfast to Stockton Springs, stop at the first (and tallest) bridge observatory in the world, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. Connecting Verona Island to Prospect, Maine, the 446-foot-tall structure towers over the Penobscot River with a public observatory offering 360-degree views extending to Mt. Desert Island and Acadia on a clear day.

Check into West Street Hotel Then Sail into Sunset [Bar Harbor, ME]

If there’s one thing Florida is known for, it’s sand, sun, and surf (okay, well, three things). With approximately 228 beaches – spanning roughly 835 miles along Florida’s coastline of straight stretches, gentle curves, and intricate inlets and islands – there is seemingly a swath of sand to be sought out around every corner. However, that doesn’t mean every beach is a best beach. In fact, there are only 10 golden crescents that get called out each year when they make the esteemed “Best Beach in Florida” list from USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards – many of them being located in Opal resort destinations, including Clearwater Beach, Treasure Island Beach, and Jupiter.

But the number one-ranked Florida beach according to USA TODAY in 2025? The two-mile municipal beach in Delray Beach set along the southeast Atlantic Coast of Florida in Palm Beach County. That makes the second year in a row that Delray Beach has earned this top distinction. “It was so exciting to win in 2024,” says Laura Simon, executive director of Delray Beach’s Downtown Development Authority. “But to come out as number one again in 2025? That was really exciting, and so well-deserved.”

Well-deserved, indeed. So what did it take for Delray to clinch the number one spot for best beach in Florida – yet again? Read on to find out.

WHAT IS DELRAY BEACH KNOWN FOR?

1. It’s a Scenic Stretch of Beach That Is to Remain Undeveloped

Ever notice that there are no high rises or buildings along Delray’s public beach? “Much of the land our city sits on was previously owned by the pioneering Gleason Family during the nineteenth century – and that included the beach,” explains Simon. “In 1899, the Gleason sisters deeded the beach to the city, but only with the promise that it remain public and accessible for all, and never to be monetized or extensively developed.”

Delray has made good on that promise. In fact, the city has invested so much into keeping it scenic, natural, and accessible, the beach also recently earned a Blue Flag designation for the third year in a row (in 2023, 2024, and 2025). Blue Flag is a prestigious globally-recognized status that means they’ve met stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria. To give you a sense of the enormity of that: It was the first of one of only two beaches in the U.S. to earn the award (the other beach is in Malibu, California).

Not to mention – thanks to a third party contracted by the city – that gorgeous golden sand is raked and graded each morning, promising a perfect canvas to stretch out and sunbathe.

2. It Offers Perfectly Temped Waters that Are Consistent Year-Around

One weekend, the water may be flat and calm, and the next, ruffled with chunky wind-swell waves that local surfers love. But one thing that is always consistent? The temperature of the water – which hovers around a comfy 73 degrees. “Because of where Delray Beach sits – very close to the Gulf Stream – the water is warmer and rarely sees shifts comparative to the more tidal intracoastal in Boynton Beach and Boca Raton,” says Simon.

3. It’s Extremely Accessible – For Everyone

The beach is centered right at the east end of Atlantic Avenue, making it easy to go from the downtown scene to the beach in just a quick stroll. “It’s kind of like Delray’s ‘font yard,’” says Simon. “Not many cities in south Florida have a main street that close to the beach.”

In addition to that, it’s also one of Palm Beach County’s most wheelchair-accessible beaches – for several reasons. A boardwalk and 300-foot, hard-packed nature trail through the dunes is wheelchair accessible, plus a 50-foot-long Mobi-Mat (a portable non-slip wheelchair beach-access mat) extends the north end of the beach for up-close views of the water.

But the neatest feature? The city offers the use of free beach wheelchairs (known as “surf chairs”) on a first-come, first-served basis. “These specialized wheelchairs have oversized wheels designed to navigate through sand and uneven terrain,” says Simon. Available to borrow from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, all you have to do is meet at either Atlantic Dunes Park or lifeguard towers South 1, South 3, or South 5 and ask for one. There’s also handicap parking on A1A and a newly constructed accessible restroom at Sarah Gleason Park.

4. It Features All the Amenities Needed for a Perfect Beach Day

While the beach lacks the high-rises and commercial development, it doesn’t skimp on facilities or amenities. Running parallel to the beach entrances is a recently widened seaglass-speckled sidewalk promenade, perfect for strolling, roller skating, and biking. An Art Deco-inspired beach pavilion – a replica of the original 1929 pavilion – is a lovely gathering space to take in ocean views under the shade of a standing-seam metal roof. Eight new retro-looking lifeguard stations (reminiscent of the kind of towers you’d see in Miami Beach) pepper the beach and are staffed by Ocean Rescue lifeguards are licensed emergency medical technicians 365 days a year. Not to mention, many of the beach entrances are equipped with bathrooms, showers; surf, bicycle and towel racks; and drinking fountains complete with bottle fillers.

Didn’t bring a beach chair? Not a problem. The city works with a third-party vendor to provide beach chairs, umbrellas, and cabanas for rent – simply sit down and the attendant will approach you. Three parks – Atlantic Dunes Park, Anchor Park, and Sandoway Park – offer playgrounds and picnic areas with easy access to the beach.

5. It Offers a Diversity of Recreation

“Surfing, volleyball, sailing, and kitesurfing are all very popular pastimes here,” explains Simon. “But these activities all have designated beach areas, so – if you’re here to purely rest and relax – you never feel bombarded. You don’t have to worry about a stray volleyball rolling into your beach picnic.”

There’s also an outfitter, Delray Beach Watersports (located half a mile south of Atlantic Avenue near Casuarina Road), where you can rent Hobie Cats, surfboards, snorkel gear, paddleboards and kayas right on the beach. In fact, it’s set only 150 yards away from the SS Inchulva (also known as “The Delray Wreck”), a 386-foot British steamship set in 15-foot-deep water that sunk in 1903. Now a popular dive site, it makes a great dive for both beginner and advanced snorkelers.  

But one of Simon’s favorite places to snorkel? About 200 yards out, past the Delray Wreck, you’ll find the ocean floor littered with sand dollars and star fish. “If you’re a strong snorkeler, it’s a great one,” she says. “I grew up here and this was how I used to love to spend my free time: diving for sand dollars.”

There’s a reason why beach vacations tend to top the chart of most popular vacation types – after all, who wouldn’t want to spend their time off spread out on a sparkling stretch of sand, bordered by crystal-clear water?

Still, when it comes to the beaches of Florida, they’re not just a tourist draw, but an insurance policy, protecting the encroachment of the ocean on upland property as well as providing a precious home to the flora and fauna that live or regularly migrate here. That’s why the Florida Department of Environmental Protection regularly put efforts into place to protect and rehab the 825 miles of sandy coastline fronting the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Straits of Florida. Sure, that means collecting shoreline data and monitoring erosion, but, once beaches reach a certain level of erosion, it also means taking action through various programs to bring the beach back to its natural state.

Enter what has been coined a “beach renourishment project,” which in simplest terms, is the process of trucking in sand to, well, beef up said beach. And, during the month of April 2025, the mile-long stretch of shoreline from Jupiter Beach Park down to the southern edge of Carlin Park received an infusion of approximately 100,000 cubic yards of sand – that includes the 1,000 feet of shoreline right in front of Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa. Here’s how it works, why it matters, and the timeline for Jupiter’s healthy shot of sand.

WHAT IS BEACH NOURISHMENT?

Coastlines and barrier islands are dynamic systems, meaning they are in a constant – albeit often subtle to the everyday visitor – state of flux, a result of wind, waves, and storms pushing the outflow of sand in a southerly direction. Therefore, over long periods of time, beach erosion can reach a level where it requires human intervention to restore sand to the site, in order to protect shoreline and stabilize the coastal habitat.

HOW DOES BEACH NOURISHMENT WORK?

You can’t just bring in sand from anywhere, dump it, and call it done. The whole renourishment process requires equal parts ecologist and construction experts.

1. Test

Core sediment samples are taken at several potential offshore borrow sites to find sand that is compatible with the existing beach. In the case of Jupiter, that sand is dredged from a 6.58-acre sand trap located 1,000 feet northeast of the mouth of the Jupiter Inlet.

2. Harvest (a.k.a. “dredging”)

A hydraulic dredge is set up at the borrow sites and acts as a suction pipe, vacuuming up a mixture of sand and water from the bottom of the ocean.

3. Pump

The mixture is pumped back to shore in a 30-inch-wide pipe and deposited along the beach in various ditches, allowing the water to drain off.

4. Disperse

Bulldozers flatten accumulated sand and spread it down the beach according to specific design plans.

WHEN WILL THE 2025 JUPITER DREDGE & BEACH RENOURISHMENT PROJECT HAPPEN?

Dredging occured from April 7–21, 2025 with the disbursement part of the project being completed by May 1. This ensures compliance with regulatory restrictions for sea turtle nesting as the coastline of North Palm Beach County – particularly the stretch in Jupiter – is home to Florida’s highest density of nesting loggerhead turtles.

MORE BEACH, MORE WILDLIFE

The bigger beach is obviously a boon to humans, looking to stretch out on the widened sandy oasis with the latest James Patterson or your Kristen Hillenbrand. But local animals also benefit from the restored habitat including benthic organisms (tiny sand-burrowing worms and crustaceans, like krill), which are a vital food source for the return of larger coastal animals. In the case of Florida, that means shorebird and marine turtle species.

Savor Some Classic Maine Seafood

No trip to Coastal Maine is complete without a smorgasbord of seafood. To get the most out of your meal, avoid the long lines at places in the village of Bar Harbor and head further south to spots like The Docksider in Northeast Harbor. This small restaurant with a homey exterior set within view of the harbor serves scores of all kinds of seafood but may be best known for its fried – yet tender – clam bellies. It also features an ice cream window serving up scoops from favorite local brand, Shain’s of Maine. Don’t want to leave the confines of Bar Harbor? Stewman’s Lobster Pound is an icon overlooking Frenchman Bay and famous for a meal called The Downeast Lobster Experience: clam chowder, a 20-ounce steamed Maine lobster, mussels, buttered sweet corn and potatoes, and finally, homemade blueberry pie for dessert. To avoid the crowds, make the trip either for a late lunch or early dinner between the times of 2:30 to 5 p.m.

Time Your Park Loop Drive Just Right

The months of July and August are the peak season for Acadia National Park, which means a congested Park Loop Road – the 27-mile main artery that runs through park – and its equally busy pull-off observation points. And since doing a circuit of this two-lane loop road is a must during any visit to take in granite ledges melting into the steel-blue sea, we suggest heading out as early as 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m. (as the crowds descend at 10 a.m. and don’t start to let up until 4 p.m.). Remember, if you are planning to bring a vehicle up Cadillac Mountain’s famous Summit Road, you’ll need more than just a park pass, but an advance vehicle reservation.

Every Wednesday through July and August, the town of Bar Harbor hosts an outdoor movie series in Agamont Park (sponsored by The Harborside Hotel, Spa & Marina), right on the edge of the water. Sightsee through the Quiet Side of Acadia

Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are obviously two of the most beautiful – and, therefore most popular – locations in Maine. But there are plenty of other scenic hidden gems worth checking out, including what’s known as the “Quiet Side of Acadia,” which comprises the areas of Mount Desert, Tremont, and Southwest Harbor, and their respective villages just west of Somes Sound. Unlike the eastern side’s Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor, there are no major downtowns here, but rather a high concentration of what true Down East Maine is about: tiny fishing villages where the daily return of lobster boats is like a celebratory parade, main streets devoid of chain stores, and weathered cottages seemingly preserved in time from the salty air.

Take an Evening Hike up Cadillac

It’s unlikely that you would start a hike after dinner. But since Cadillac Mountain is the tallest mountain on the eastern coast of the US, rising 1,530 feet above sea level, it’s still light at the summit until 9 p.m. at the height of summer, making 5 p.m. an acceptable time to start your 2.2-mile trek up (especially as most hikers have finished their longer routes for the day, leaving the trails empty). From the Park Loop Road, you’ll take the North Ridge Trail, which travels along the mountain’s north ridge with a few steep sections broken up by level sections, before hitting the summit, which affords views of the Porcupine Islands and Bar Harbor.

Take A Boat Tour to A Nineteenth-Century Island Homestead

While Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. – Maine’s largest boating tour company – may be best known for its whale watches (it is, after all, a part of the name), don’t let that lead you to believe that it’s the only type of tour offered. In fact, The Baker Island Tour is actually one of the company’s most unique offerings. Led by an Acadia park ranger, this exclusive excursion travels nine miles off the coast to Baker Island, a remote, mostly uninhabited isle home to a 200-year-old family farmstead that feels like it’s frozen in time. Guests disembark and get to explore the island while learning what nineteenth-century life on this remote isle was like.

Good thing it wasn’t: Now owned by Florida’s Conservation and Recreational Lands program, it’s actually home to the country’s largest tract of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock, as well as 84 protected species of plants and animals. But come the months of March, April and May, what people marvel at the most are the scores of butterflies as the park blooms with nectar-rich flowers crucial to these fluttering insects’ life cycles. Thanks to an abundance of seagrass beds and warm-water outflows from power plants as well as natural springs that feed the area, Sarasota Bay provides the perfect winter refuge for cold-sensitive manatees, where the mammals mingle in large numbers until the end of March. For your best chance of getting up close with these slow-moving gentle giants, look for kayak tours that paddle around Lido Key mangrove tunnels. Indulge in the Winter Opera Season

The upcoming 2025 Winter Opera Festival – an annual tradition by the Sarasota Opera House – is being touted as a season that will hit all the high notes thanks to a careful curation of performances. Running from February through March, four productions will take the historic stage of the 1926 Mediterranean Revival opera house, including the timeless comedy of Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and the treasured favorite of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. The season kicks off on February 15 with a double bill of Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci – two classic tales of love and betrayal presented in one night.

2025 SARASOTA FESTIVALS & EVENTS

Sarasota Seafood & Music Festival | January 10–12, 2025

This lively annual weekend event brings together delicious fresh seafood, live music, and a vibrant atmosphere at the Sarasota Fairgrounds. Sharktoberfest | January 18, 2025

Hosted annually at the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, Sharktoberfest is a craft beer fest with a marine twist. In fact, the aquarium – consisting of indoor and covered outdoor exhibits – is lined with different regional craft breweries serving up samples of their beer, so a stroll to see all the animals and learn about Mote’s groundbreaking research also feels a bit like a pub crawl. Each guest receives a commemorative tasting glass, and there will also be live entertainment, food stations, and a cash bar.

Brown Bag Concert Series | Thursdays, February 6–March 27, 2025

This free community event invites locals and visitors to enjoy live music in the outdoor setting of Phillippi Estate Park from noon to 1 p.m. every Thursday. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own “brown bag” lunches, sit back, and soak up the sounds of talented local musicians performing a variety of genres.

That’s perhaps best demonstrated in the seemingly never-ending merry-go-round of annual eclectic Key West festivals that call this southernmost outpost home, from May’s Key West Songwriters Festival to October’s wild and zany (and clothing optional) Fantasy Fest. And with four Opals located in fun and funky town – Opal Key Resort & Marina, The Capitana Key West, The Laureate Key West, and Sunset Key Cottages – there are plenty of places to stay when you frame a visit around one of these top Key West festivals.

THE KEY WEST LITERARY SEMINAR
January 9–12, 2025

Best For: Serious readers who just wanna have fun

The Key West Literary Seminar is a four-day event that explores a unique literary theme each January, with presentations by some of the world’s most renowned writers – from big kahunas like Margaret Atwood and Jamaica Kincaid to fantasy writer Marlon James and young adult books legend Meg Cabot of Princess Diaries fame. This year, the theme is “Family” – where acclaimed authors such as John Irving, Ayana Mathis, and Nathan Hill will explore the concept of family through literature and how those ties help to shape the stories we tell. The schedule is packed with keynotes, signings, readings, presentations, and dinners, but since the main venue is right on Duval Street, you don’t have to choose between the literary life and Key West nightlife.

CONCH REPUBLIC INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION
April 18–27, 2025

Best For: Sea dogs with Libertarian leanings

Some 30 years ago, in protest to a U.S. Border Patrol roadblock that shut down tourism, the then-mayor “seceded” Key West from the United States to become the Conch Republic – even declaring war on the US. Although a totally tongue-in-cheek demonstration (Major Dennis Wardlow was a bit of a joker) and a perfect example of Key West’s quirky spirit, the act was actually effective – the roadblock was immediately and quietly suspended. Not to mention, the “fifth world nation” stuck – today, complete with its own flag, passports, and this 10-day “independence” celebration, which kicks off with a conch-blowing contest and continues with boat races, a parade down Duval Street, victory parties, and the Pirate’s Ball and costume competition.

KEY WEST SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL
April 30–May 4, 2025

Best For: Those who like grooving on a Sunday afternoon – and Wednesday through Saturday, too

In the morning, it might be blues on the beach, then in the afternoon, powerhouse country rock in the Cuban cultural center. When you attend the Key West Songwriters Festival, the largest event of its kind in the world, you get to sample a wide spread of music genres thanks to 50 shows and 200-plus artist across some of Key West’s most famous indoor and outdoor venues, from watering holes to historic theatres. But remember, this is a festival dedicated to songwriting, meaning all the acts – which has featured the likes of platinum-selling recording artist Tyler Farr and CMT Award-winning Florida Georgia Line – do more than just perform their hits. They let you exclusively in on the little-known stories that inspired each and every tune.

HEMINGWAY DAYS
July 2025 (Exact date still to come)

Best For: English majors who are ready to come out of their shells

Honoring the legacy of the American literary giant who lived and wrote on the island during the 1930s, Hemingway Days is an annual event that is all about the old man and the sea. Yes, there’s the requisite feast of prose, poetry readings, and presentations by Hemingway scholars (in previous years, writer Cristen Hemingway Jaynes, the novelist’s great-granddaughter, made an appearance). But the bell that tolls loudest in festival-goers’ hearts is the lookalike contest, in which hundreds of white-bearded, cocktail-slinging Papa Hemingway doppelgangers ham it up for the crowd (think of it like a beauty contest for old men), then take to Duval Street for a mock bull run.

KEY WEST BREWFEST
August 28–September 1, 2025

Best For: Those who like to pair their surf with suds

Whether you’re a brewmeister with a finely honed palate or you simply love to kick back with a cold one, you can sample more than 200 beers from 60 vendors – both locally, nationally, and worldwide – at the pairing dinners, brunches, seminars, happy hours, pool parties, and late-night after-parties at the Key West Brewfest. The Signature Tasting Event, held on South Beach just below the famous Southernmost marker, features the latest craft-erpieces from acclaimed breweries like Lagunitas, Terrapin Beer Company, Dogfish Head, and many more.

FANTASY FEST
October 17–26, 2025

Best For: Those who love Halloween…and aren’t offended by a little nudity

October used to be a quiet time in Key West…until Fantasy Fest sprung up in a cloud of glitter and feathers. Back in 1979, a few local business owners decided to drum up some action with an event that riffed on the only other party-friendly day of the month: Halloween. That first small but outrageous costumed march down Duval Street has now grown into 10 days of parades, street fairs, and glamorous balls – drawing some 75,000 visitors annually. There’s a different theme each year – from “Freaks, Geeks, and Goddesses” to the plays of Tennessee Williams – and opportunities galore to strut your stuff, including the Masquerade March and the Fantasy Fest Parade. With the exception of the Goombay Festival (see next highlight), a lot of these activities aren’t for kids – the full schedule of “Little Black Book” events include “naughty” bike rides, pajama parties, burlesque shows, and the famous Fantasy Fest Kink Party. Think of it as the embodiment – with lots of skin showing – of Key West’s official motto: “One Human Family.”

GOOMBAY FESTIVAL
October 2025 (Exact date still to come)

Best For: Those who are looking for a more family-friendly fest

A festival within a festival, the two-day Goombay Festival is Fantasy Fest’s core family-friendly offering that celebrates Key West’s Bahamian heritage with Caribbean food, arts, crafts, dancing, face painting, carnival rides, and parades. Goombay is a form of Bahamian music (it’s also the name of a goatskin drum), and the festival is filled with rhythm – gospel, reggae, calypso, soca, hip-hop, and more, all performed live – as well as the Junkanoo Rush, a traditional Bahamanian celebration with costumed marchers and dancers. The events are centered around the island’s historic Bahama Village, a 16-block neighborhood just a short walk from Old Town, where you’ll find classic Florida Conch architecture in sherbet shades, and a plethora of great restaurants and shops.

THE “BIGHT” BEFORE CHRISTMAS
December 2025 (Exact dates still to come)

Best For: Those who love the holiday trappings, but are not dreaming of a white Christmas

Swap out the snow for sand, the eggnog for a margarita, and make your slice of pie that of key lime. In the month before Christmas, Key West’s Bight (a bend in the shoreline on the northwest side of the island that creates a naturally protected harbor, from Green Street to the Ferry Terminal) hosts an expansive series of holiday events, including the lighting of three Christmas trees – one made with fishing buoys, another with lobster traps, and a nautically themed pine tree – the Classic Car Show, and holiday concerts. But none is more anticipated than the Lighted Boat Parade, which takes the glow to another level by giving entrants plenty of incentive to go big or go home with more $20,000 in prizes. Expect brilliant displays of holiday lights, conch shells, gingerbread men, jumping dolphins, and even a few Grinches.
